Honour Based Violence

Honour Based Violence

Honour-based violence is a crime which has or may have been committed to protect or defend the honour of the family and / or the community.

It happens as a result of cultural beliefs, not religion. Whether it is due to relationships formed with the opposite sex, how a person dresses, or choice of friends, perpetrators believe their victim has brought shame on their family or community by breaking customs and tradition.

Honour-based violence can happen in a number of cultures, and both men and women may be affected.

Crimes include:

  • Forced marriage
  • False imprisonment
  • Disfigurement
  • Sexual assault and rape
  • Female Genital Mutilation
  • Kidnap
  • Harassment
  • Stalking
  • Assault

South Wales Police are fully committed to tackling and preventing honour-based violence and supporting all victims.

We have specially-trained officers who, together with our partner agencies, will work with victims to ensure they are protected.

We understand that confidentiality is extremely important, and as a victim, none of your dealings with South Wales Police or partner agencies will be made known without your permission. Your safety is our priority.
