Sexual Violence

A sexual assault (or indecent assault) takes place when a person is forced to engage in sexual activity. This could be a physical act, such as sexually touching a person against their will, or a psychological act, such as forcing somebody to witness sexual activity.

Rape is an extremely serious form of sexual assault. It occurs when a male intentionally penetrates another person’s vagina, anus, or mouth, without that person’s consent.

Both men and women may experience sexual violence with devastating effects.

South Wales Police treat all incidents of rape and sexual assault very seriously, and will thoroughly investigate all occurrences.

Our specially trained officers understand the distress of victims of these cases, and work in partnership with a range of dedicated agencies, such as Sexual Assault Referral Centres, to ensure victims receive the best possible care.

As a victim, you can expect our full support from your initial report, right through to the end of the investigation and during court proceedings.

It is important that all incidents of sexual violence are reported to us, so that we may bring offenders to justice and prevent other people from suffering. The sooner the incident is reported, the better chance we have of collecting any vital physical evidence before it may be lost.

If you or somebody you know has been a victim of sexual assault or rape, please contact us by dialling 101.

Remember, in an emergency always dial 999.
