The South Wales and Dyfed Powys Police Black Police Association (SWDPBPA) was formed in 1999, and aims to make South Wales a safer and more peaceful place, where the public, especially those who are young, vulnerable or from minority ethnic communities, have a high degree of confidence in their police.
Members of the association have an important role to play in achieving this aim, since they are first and foremost part of the minority ethnic communities, and secondly, members of the police service.
Constituted 15th October 1999, the association seeks to improve the working environment of minority ethnic staff within South Wales and Dyfed Powys by enhancing the quality of service provided to its diverse communities.
By providing a support network for all minority ethnic staff, and striving to improve relationships between the police and minority ethnic communities, the association will play a positive role in supporting internal staff members, and externally supporting all communities within South Wales and Dyfed Powys.
The association has six objectives:
• To provide a support network
• To provide a social network
• To work towards equality of opportunity
• To work towards improving relationships between police and Black people in South Wales and Dyfed Powys
• To work towards recruitment and reducing wastage
• To assist in policy development
Members of the association are currently involved in projects and initiatives within South Wales and Dyfed Powys that work towards these objectives. For example, recruitment/promotion assessment procedures, service delivery training, provision of mentor and first contact schemes, presentations at force and community level and internal strategic policy groups.
The association is a member of the National Black Police Association (NBPA). The NBPA represent all the Black Police Associations/Networks within the police service across the United Kingdom.
The Chair of SWDPBPA is Navin Velani, who is supported by Deputy Chair Bharat Narbad and Secretary PC Peter Hoole.
