South Wales Police

Assistant Chief Constable (Specialist Operations)

Temporary Assistant Chief Constable of Specialist Operations

Richard Lewis

Mr Richard Lewis

Originally from Neath, Richard completed a Bio-Chemistry degree before being inspired by his father to join South Wales Police, after hearing his experiences as a serving police officer in the west of the force area.

Sworn in as a constable in 1987, Richard first walked the beat in Porthcawl, and has since served in a variety of roles as he has risen through the ranks. These include uniform and CID posts in Cardiff, Swansea, Bridgend, Neath and Port Talbot, and Headquarters roles as Staff Officer and Head of the Operational Support Division.

The highlights of Richard’s career to date include serving as Divisional Commander for the Bridgend area from 2003 – 2005, and acting as the Public Order Ground Commander for the June 1998 European Summit held in Cardiff, in which the Heads of State and Government came together to discuss economic growth.

He was also the Project Manager for the force implementation of Niche RMS, a core IT system that’s vital for daily operational policing.

After a spell as Head of Performance Management for the force, Richard took up the post of Temporary Assistant Chief Constable of Specialist Operations in January 2010.

In this role, he is responsible for:

  • Call & Incident Management
  • Specialist Operations
  • ICT / Information Management

Richard is looking forward to the challenges that lay ahead in his new role and supporting the Chief Constable to improve public confidence in South Wales Police.
