Forced Marriage: What the police can do

In all forced marriage and honour based violence incidents, the police will provide support and take the appropriate course of action.

We will …

  • Recognise and respect the individuals wishes
  • Provide guidance and inform the individual what choices are available to them
  • Provide assistance with regards to any criminal investigations
  • Ensure that anything discussed will be in the strictest confidence
  • Assist with safety measures in order to provide support and protection for victims.

We will not …

  • Send the individual away or not listen to them
  • Discuss their issues with either family or community members
  • Attempt to mediate with their families
  • Do anything with first seeking the permission of the individual.

South Wales Police has …

  • A specialist unit with expertise dealing with people from minority ethnic communities.
  • The officers in this unit have a very good understanding of all the issues and difficulties surrounding forced marriage and honour based violence.
  • They will provide guidance and support
