Focus on retail crime
Issued 16 December 2025
Shoplifting continues to be a main focus for us during the next few months and with the introduction of the new Town Centre Street Warden, we aim to work with him to identify and apprehend shoplifters and further reduce crime in the area.
Last December we set retail crime as our priority for the Castleland ward - since the there have been 16 incidents of shoplifting reported to police. There have already been 9 arrests for those offences with other charges likely for the most recent cases. This can be considered a success with a detection rate of 56%, more than double that of the national average for 2025 of around 20%. (office for national statistic2024/25) This has been achieved by working with retailers to improve CCTV capabilities in store and by use of plain clothes officers to target known offenders.
