For the purpose of this request, trauma-informed practice training refers specifically to training that is explicitly described, delivered or accredited as trauma-informed practice, trauma-informed policing, trauma-informed care, or trauma-informed approaches. Please do not include general mental health, safeguarding, vulnerability, domestic abuse or wellbeing training unless the training is specifically identified as trauma-informed.

 

I would be grateful if you could provide the following information under the Freedom of Information Act 2000:

 

1. Does your force currently provide specific trauma-informed practice training to police officers and/or police staff?

 

If yes, please provide:

1. The name of the training programme.
2. Whether the training is provided to police officers, police staff, or both.
3. Whether the training is mandatory or voluntary.
4. The duration of the training (hours or days).
5. Whether the training is delivered internally or by an external provider.
6. Whether refresher training is provided and, if so, how frequently.

We consulted with our Learning and Development Department and our Safeguarding and Public Protection Department  who have provided the following information in relation to your request.

However, two Trauma-Informed Specific Continuous Professional Development Inputs have been made available to Officers and Staff recently in May, June and July 2026 and the information on these has been broken down as per the questions asked on training:

South Wales Police have undertaken trauma-informed self-assessments to better understand current practice, identify strengths and areas for development, and establish a baseline for future improvement across the organisation. The findings from these assessments are currently being reviewed and will inform the development of a force-wide strategy to embed trauma-informed practice across the organisation.

 

South Wales Police utilise the TRiM process to support officers and staff following traumatic events. Supervisors are provided with support and guidance.
